What is fitness?

Being fit to scuba dive is not just physical

  • Emotional Fitness

Diving can be relaxing & even therapeutic. But it has it's challenges: human stuff like anxiety & fear can be an issue sometimes. Being emotionally fit to manage stress, respond to social and communication issues helps.

  • Physical Fitness

Sometimes diving involves rolling out of a hammock into the water. Other times it is harder than that. One of the leading causes of death in scuba divers is poor cardiac health and fitness. Being fit enough for the conditions you are diving is important.

  • Mental Fitness

There's lots to learn in scuba diving, it's one of the attractions! Being able to remember and perform skills as a diver helps us to stay safe. We also benefit from mental processes to solve problems and handle stress.

Courses & Services

"Mental health or stress is an issue ...

... and I want to get back in the water"

Taking a break from diving due to depression, anxiety or stress is a good idea in some cases, but can be frustrating when you know how diving makes you feel. If mental health concerns are getting in the way of your diving, or your diving doctor is concerned about your fitness to dive, you may want to consider psychological support. Services are confidential and recognised by major UK insurers.

"I was involved in a diving incident...

... and experiencing psychological issues"

Diving incidents like drowning, decompression injury, being lost at sea, can be traumatic physically and mentally. Following medical assessment and treatment, if you find that distress, flashbacks/nightmares or anxiety in diving is not subsiding, then psychological treatment may be indicated. However, most psychologists (like non-diving medical doctors) have little understanding of diving or recompression. A diving psychologist specialises in issues affecting scuba divers, can understand what happened to you, as well as

Diving is such a mental sport, but training doesn't include very much on what to do with your mind underwater. It follows an evidence-based approach to help people improve performance in various sports.

This course is a great opportunity to gain insight and to reflect on the psychological aspects that are at play when diving; it invites you to reflect on our behavior as well as our drivers to "being a diver". I believe it is really complementing the technical / skills based diving course, and therefor a must do to become a more complete diver.

I took this course kinda on a whim -and to fill in the time with some off time after some surgery. I had heard to jabber about the course on some Facebook Scuba Groups so looked it up. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The content is quite rich and well constructed. Laura Walton has created a well thought out curriculum that is delivered on a modern learning platform that is a delight to use. I really felt that it was a valuable course and gave me some rich insights into my understanding of the mind and many aspects of psychology as they relate to diving - with enough practical takeaways that I can employ on each dive. Most of all, I felt that the real takeaway was the ability to put words to the feels and emotions one has at depth and how those can hamper our ability to get the most enjoyment from this sport. Awesome course, which gave me a lot to think about.

Just the right level of detail to provide background and theory and some great practical examples of how you yourself can apply this in the real world, with practice sessions to get you started. This is an easy to follow, straightforward guide and an excellent tool; rather like having your own little cheerleader cheering you on, except you can learn to be your own, very effective, cheerleader! Excellent course, thank you, highly recommend divers give it a try.
